Ramifications of rule changes in NCAA football

written August 27, 2006

New rule changes in NCAA football figure to depress scoring. However, there are broader ramifications for fans and bettors.

Effective this year, the clock will start when an official marks the ball ready for play. Previously, the clock didn't start before the snap. Also, the clock starts on a kickoff when the ball is kicked, rather than when it touches the hands of a receiver.

These rules are being implemented to compress games into a smaller temporal window. The games were growing increasingly longer as more games were televised - dictating more commercial breaks - and as more teams embraced modes of attack that translated into more frequent clock stoppages.

Final Four Betting Preview: Kansas (35-3) vs. North Carolina (36-2)

In what is sure to be one of the most memorable Final Fours in NCAA Tournament history, powerhouses Kansas and North Carolina will take the floor at the Alamodome in San Antonio in Game Two, following the UCLA/Memphis matchup. It marks the first time in tournament history that all of the top seeds have advanced to the Final Four.

The matchup with Kansas will be bittersweet for UNC's Roy Williams, who coached in Lawrence for 15 seasons before taking the helm in Chapel Hill five years ago. The significance of it is not lost on Williams.

Louisiana Tech

3/5 OL back is OK, 0/4 DL, only one over 249 lbs. No QB. “I thought the defense didn’t come out ready to play that first series,” said Tech head coach Jack Bicknell. “However, they did a nice job the rest of the day. We have a lot of young guys over there and I still have concerns." The Bulldog defense intercepted six passes, including three of Champions, while registering seven sacks. Champion does not have a YPP and throws ints. Bad redzone offense. The defense only returns two starters, the La Tech offense struggled to move against it.

Although they are considered in a rebuilding year, Xavier is the favorite to win the 2008 Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Musketeers are posted at even money at Bodog. “It’s not a good year for the A-10,” says Cy McCormick of MasterLockLine.com. He points to the fact that Temple was second in the conference at 11-5, but has only 18 wins overall.

The sportsbooks say the Massachusetts Minutemen are 5/2 and the aforesaid Temple Owls are 3/1. The erratic Saint Joseph’s Hawks and the Richmond Spiders are next at 5/1.

College Football Preview - Tulsa at Navy, Air Force at Wyoming

September 23, 2006

Tulsa (+4.5) at Navy - 10:30am Pacific - Game #129-130

Two weeks ago Tulsa lost on the road to a strong BYU team who was primed to make a statement in their home opener. In fact the Cougars came back the next week and outplayed Boston College on the road before losing in OT. In this matchup Tulsa takes on a more favorable opponent in one dimensional Navy. Tulsa did rebound from the BYU loss with an easy 28-3 win over North Texas last week. Their high powered offense was slow to get on track in part due to two first half turnovers but 21 second half points quickly put the game out of reach. Junior QB Paul Smith comes into this game with a 28-to-10 touchdown to interception ratio.
